Reasons to organize Head Start Awareness and  Diaper drive, Sanya Pirani, 5th grader, read the article on “talk poverty” about 10.2% Minnesotan families and 12.7 % children under 18 live under poverty guideline (that means family of four earns $24,259/year). She also learned from CAP agency that we have 395 families in our community who are enrolled in the head start program. She also learned Head start provides children and families holistic solutions. Let me explain, it provides early education, proper health checkups, social services, and proper nutrition resources. She realized that many people have no or little knowledge about head start program. She also found out that 1 in 3 mothers experience diaper needs in the first 3 months of a child’s birth. 48% of families delay changing diapers to extend their supply, Diapers cannot be bought with food stamps, Diaper supplies are usually the requirement for day cares and did you know Governor Dayton has dedicated a week in September for a diaper awareness week for above reasons? For all these reason Sanya thought as her organization needed to do something about this. In other words Sanya believe in just society and trying to help poverty stricken communities.  She recruited local youth who could help her.

Sanya's Hope For Children Team includes Andrea, Mathew A, Sophia, Harrison, Ian, and Hidden Oaks middle school student council students, we also have Mary Grace, Ella H, Annie M, Anna M, Hayley C, and Mary S from St. Wenceslaus Catholic School, well as Prior Lake National Honor society students are volunteering. Her team included. We had over 40 volunteers. You probably wondering why youth and other volunteers care about poverty? Sanya explains very well in her speeches and in her talk to youth, she says “Poverty and Hunger are intertwined and have no borders. However, human dignity is tied to every other human on the earth. When millions of people are hungry right here in America and around the world, we suffocate human potential because a hungry mind cannot think.” This message resonate very well with her team that is the reason all her partner were passionate about helping Sanya.

Event details, achievements, what changed and community impact: Event was open to all local community including Scott, Dakota and Carver County. It was fun event includes, games, free gifts, candies, music, Arts and Craft by Amy O’Malley family, Davanni’s Pizza, silent auction, dance by Shana’s Studio, teddy bear band. We had around 200 community members turn out to support and enjoy the event. It was the very first event Sanya’s Hope For Children and team ever organized. The team plans to continue summary events in future to help and support local community. This was low budget event goal was to create awareness and help local community in need and mission was accomplished team went $2000 ahead of the budget. In addition, we had over 13,000 diapers to give away. Sanya’s class teacher Mrs. Dicke, her Principal Dr. Warner, Savage Mayor Janet came to event to support. Senator Amy Klobuchaar send the video recorded message to Sanya ad Team for the event. Ending poverty is everyone’s business. This event created awareness among 250 community people including youth, local families, and business (since vendors participated). Youth creatively share their experience in form of music, posters, talks, answering questions, social media and more. Sanya and team have demonstrated to the local community power of one by share this experience, thought their leadership, and success stories will be hard to measure but if any contributions to local poverty reduction efforts will be the alive example of small steps towards the bigger goal.

Collective Impact: Collective Impact community able to benefit over 13,000 diapers to under privilege families, there were food, resources, and monetary donations received. 385 head Start Families (these family of 4 makes less than $25,000 a year) was directly helped by many ways. Event achieved varies level of community engagement about need to help poor in our own local community.

Community mobilizing and Change: Community mobilization was unique. This was first ever event organized by 5th graders. This event brought together the most innovative and inspiring examples of neighborhood action at its best and then invites us to accelerate our effectiveness by learning from one another and imagining how we can ensure our collective work has greater impact. I think this event facilitated and change how the mind set of people were about what a child could do for society, how small effort could turn into something big and more.
